“The Citizens of Tomorrow: Stories for Active Communities” was an international Youth Exchange hosted by YETF in Paphos, bringing together 30 young people from five countries to explore how storytelling can inspire personal growth, strengthen communities, and promote inclusive European values. The project aimed to help young people use narrative tools not only for creative expression but also as a means to better understand themselves, connect with others, and contribute to active citizenship.
Throughout the mobility, participants learned and practised several creative storytelling techniques, including Rory’s Story Cubes, Kurt Vonnegut’s story shapes, and The Hero’s Journey, using them to craft stories based on imagination, memory, and personal experience. These methods encouraged participants to build stronger communication skills, think creatively, and develop confidence in expressing their ideas.
Workshops focused on the power of stories in fostering empathy, intercultural understanding, and civic engagement. Through group activities, discussions, and collaborative story-creation tasks, young people explored how narratives can be used to highlight community issues, promote dialogue, and strengthen social bonds.
The programme combined self-reflection with creativity, allowing participants to analyse story structures, share personal experiences, and understand how storytelling influences emotions and perspectives. They also engaged in community-oriented tasks and intercultural evenings that deepened connections among the group.
By the end of the exchange, participants had improved their communication, active listening, and critical thinking skills, while gaining a clearer understanding of how storytelling can be used to inspire change and strengthen communities. The project successfully empowered young people to become more expressive, empathetic, and engaged European citizens.
